Course Description

A brilliant question deserves the right design, and the wrong one cannot be rescued by any amount of analysis. This level hands you the map of every major study design and a decision flowchart you will reuse for the rest of your career, so you can look at any question and know exactly which design it calls for.

Who this level is for

Anyone moving from a research question to a study plan: clinicians, researchers, coordinators, program and monitoring-and-evaluation staff, and learners from other fields. Best taken after Foundations (or with equivalent research-question experience). No statistics background assumed.

What you'll learn

  • Why study design matters more than the statistical analysis that follows
  • How the major designs are classified: descriptive vs analytical, observational vs experimental
  • Where each design sits on the evidence hierarchy, and why "lower" designs still matter in LMIC settings
  • How time direction distinguishes cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies
  • How to match a question to a design using a simple decision flowchart you keep for life

You finish with: 1-2 candidate designs for your research question.
